When the internet first came into popular existence in the 1990's, it was great. No censorship, everything free. Tremendous research tool for genealogy, etc. Then, legal rulings eventually mandated that internet hosts like Netscape, later like Google, were responsible for the behavior of users of their services. Hence, memberships, subscriptions, censorship, etc. And then monetization became the norm (totally ruined genealogy research).

Today the internet is more like a digitized version of cable TV.

Sad to see this.
