Maybe not forever but if enough people never ever take self-custody they can run the paper bitcoin ponzi for very long.
Most people will use custodial wallets. It’s not possible for everyone to run their own lightning node. Not enough sats for everyone to open a lightning channel. The thing that will protect Bitcoin from becoming a similar Ponzi to gold is the ability to take full custody at anytime. In other words, bank runs.
