To answer your question more directly, I think dying cells produce strange structures in an attempt to manage the waste, and the more shit you throw in the soup the more interesting the structures are going to be.

What do you make of the electron micrograph images purporting to show viruses?
All mammalian viruses seem to be round blobs which are pretty unconvincing images, but bacteriophages have that classic "lunar lander" look that seems unlikely to be some subcellular component.
Do you think these are fabrications? Artifacts? Something else?
