I'm reading the second book of the 3 Body Problem, and I have to suspend my disbelief really hard and believe that the UN isn't a criminal organization run by a globalist mafia, but rather an honest-to-god coalition of the best of humanity whose sole purpose is the well-being of humankind.

It's very difficult.
