That's awesome! I have an interest to learn welding as a 'just in case' practical skill, but never had the time to pursue it.

How long do you figure the basics take to learn?

I can teach nearly anyone that's physically able to weld the basics of MIG, TIG, or Stick in a weekend. So... Three intensive weekends?

👀

I might have to find a local who will accept sats in exchange for a few weekends of learning!

I hope you could, but, you'd better be prepared to cough up a lot. Anyone worth learning from that's not friend or family SHOULD charge you their hourly rate, and that's not cheap for a welder.

My BIL is a welder, I might be able to convince him. What is the hourly rates for a welder who is worth their salt? I know it's going to vary based on experience and region, and I don't want to low-ball him an offer for his time.

Off the books work I charge anywhere for $75-150/hr, plus expenses.

Good looking out, I appreciate your insight 🤙

Any time. I love helping on-board people into welding and fabrication. Don't feel shy if you've got any other questions.

Some charge a lot more.

And yes, you should. It's one of the most vital skills to have if you aspire to break free from dependence on the system.
