Hey, kids; remember — little need to use URL shortening services here.

• character limits are generally sufficient

• they obfuscate the link (which the security- & privacy-conscious will avoid)

• they add an unnecessary 3rd-party point of failure

• that 3rd party can track/spy on traffic

• some, like those ending in .ly, are hosted in countries (e.g. Libya) with regimes with questionable political motives for tracking/filtering traffic

nostr:npub1xsymv0rcpcxj360a5274hx2l8d46lhfrz82w0ra3e0kneqkwkxysyxcevg All great points. I feel like the only time one should use a link shortener these days is if you really need to make it easy to read and type, *and* it has a short lifetime, like a flyer promoting your band’s show next weekend.

Anything with a longer lifetime, you should probably set up your own redirect on a site you control like mydomain.com/myredirect. Anything that’s likely to be around months or years later, you really need ownership of that.
