Is it fair to assume that VLC isn't what you're looking for.
I found this reddit thread in case VLC isn't what you're looking for.
Elisa is my goto.
Not sure about the codec support, it's more about the audio subsystem. Like GStreamer or pipewire these days ...
oh, i'm using gnome/zorin... i'm just gonna use rhythmbox for now, it's reasonable, does all the things, actually, i was just kinda hoping for something that had an extra metadata, i kinda don't want to modify my audio files at all, but some of them are definitely badly tagged, i guess i can leave my backup as is... i'm trying something out - setting all the files to read-only so the filesystem nags me before i do something to them
back in the days (i cared about such things) i used id3tool.
ultimately endup redownloading things with lidarr which gets things by metadata so correctly. usually anyways ...
yeah, that's why i wish it was an external db so it doesn't alter the files... doesn't really matter though i guess, i just don't want to mangle them

I spent like 2 weeks organizing my ebooks. thousands of them. and in czech, so no hash help at all. tedious, tiring and still not done.
