If the law says that you can use a gun to protect yourself and family, then the law didn't say you must use a lawfully registered gun to protect yourself and family.
What you're saying is the law is more concerned with HOW you protect yourself and family than actually protecting yourself and family.
What does the law say about protecting yourself and family using a knife? A baseball bat? A tire iron? A sword? A hammer? A taser gun? A flame thrower?
