Politicians don't want to stop spending. Why would they? The money spent by government is what gives them power and wealth.

The only situation in which the incentives align to cut spending is in a moment of crisis, when their power is directly and immediately threatened.

But as long as they can kick the can down the road and make it someone else's problem, they will.
