Grain was the basis for the first recorded kingdoms. Warlords would force a bunch of retards to grow grain and then hoard it in fortified cities. Since it keeps much longer than fresh foods, is quantifiable, can be reliably moved, predicted, and most importantly taxed it gave rise to the earliest grain kingdoms.
