Here in Manitoba, we have a thing called a “social”

Recently engaged couples have a social to raise money for the wedding.

Tickets are usually $10-15 to get in. DJ, prizes, midnight snack.

Ticket sales

50/50 sales

Liquor sales

Good socials can raise $10-15k cash money.

It seems like Manitoba is the only place that does this. Blows my mind.

Anything like this where you’re from?

Alberta here.

Parents usually foot the bill if they are a young couple.

These happen in Ireland all the time

I should have read your post properly…! We have these for charities etc. not for funding weddings.

In Ireland the bride and groom will usually receive enough money in gifts to cover most of the wedding

Do they still ask for money and gifts at the wedding? Or is that free?

I hate weddings 🤷. I like parties though.

We call them Jack and Jill in Ontario

In China the couple or their families pay upfront for the wedding but guests are expected to bring red envelopes (红包) with cash.
