as someone who worked from 2011-2017 throwing hip hop raves including booking lil b, many associated acts, and selling based god merch, I feel like I’m more qualified than most to comment and I would say what was once a based scene of twerk raves that were based on freedom of expression turned into bunch of woke virtue signalers.

Based comes from the rapper Lil B who called himself "based god" because people used to call him "based" derogatorily, it basically meant crackhead, but he decided to just own it and ever since it went viral online it's just become slang for cool.
