Why v1? Does it not make sense to use v2 if even just for the encryption?

v2 is already in working order from the Bitcoin Core side, but it requires a proxy, because there is no v2 pool yet, and only very limited v2 asic firmware support.

That would make sense, for ppl who want to do without a "solo pool".

What's fairly easy (I'm being told), is installing publicpool on your favorite node hosting OS alongside your bitcoin node, and point your solo miner to the local pool. Haven't tried it myself yet.
