First milking of the season of East Friesian Dairy Sheep

We were caught off guard by this ewe having her lamb so we didn't have our milking setup dialed in yet. This is our first season in which we already have all the equipment necessary to milk the dairy sheep along with a little experience from last year. We wanted to start milking immediately to encourage maximum milk production so we grabbed a container and started milking.

Milking East Friesian Dairy Sheep

Getting things in order at our milking stanchion. The sheep are still uncomfortable with it so we brought the lamb over to help calm the sheep down.

Took the time to trim the hooves too. They were in a pretty wet paddock over the winter so the hooves needed some attention.

Getting the hang of milking. There is definitely a learning curve and I'm sure things would move much more quickly if we had a mentor near by to show us thier technique.

All in all, another step forward in our sovereign dairy production.

Second East Friesian Dairy Ewe's Lambs are born. Twins!

Now that both of the dairy sheep have their lambs we will be milking both daily.

Tried putting the lamb in a tote to keep it contained and close to it's mom so she would remain calm during milking.

It's getting easier each day and I'm sure we will have the hang of it in no time. Milking around 3 pints each time from this ewe.

Eating the first batch of sheep milk yogurt!

Featuring fresh picked strawberries and maple syrup from the homestead, this is our first batch of sheep milk yogurt. We used the crock pot to make it with starter culture from some yogurt we had frozen (purchased from the local Bitcoin meetup with sats). Such a good feeling to know that everything in the bowl was grown and produced right here on the homestead.
