People used to just not divorce, even if they split up.

It's still that way in many countries. One of them just moves back in with relatives or gets an apartment, and it's like, "Well, that didn't work out."

It may be partly an indictment on how incredibly shitty the State-default prenuptial contract is.

Good point. Seem to need a divorce to regulate even mundane concerns, like how to facilitate mortgage payments.
