This week has brought the first significant nectar flows of the season which means the bees are very active and we can breathe a sigh of relief that these colonies have successfully overwintered. 👏
While thier success is not guaranteed, they all appear to be strong in numbers. Next step is to check in on the queens to ensure that they are active and producing eggs. Over the next few weeks the size of the colonies will increase dramatically as brood for this season’s workers begins to hatch out and mature. This is a critical time for them to begin collecting nectar and pollen, which will influence success for the remainder of this season — and importantly, the bees begin to build up thier depleted honey stores again, some of which eventually makes it’s way into jars and onto your table. 😋
