hm, i can't change zap amounts with Damus and Zeus as the wallet and client. Damus calls it a "default" amount but i can't use anything but the default. is it because i'm using Zeus?

Have you tried long press on the ⚡icon & using custom amount to zap? Maybe that will work

The long press works just the default amount in the setting controls that tap zap

use getalby / WoS only for nostr - nothing else

lnbits / bbw supports NIP57 also
