The castle was founded in 1264 by the ‘Iron and Gold King’, Přemysl Otakar II, is one of the Czech Republic’s most important Gothic monuments. It became famous in the medieval period as the place where the next-to-last Přemyslid king of Bohemia, Wenceslas II (son of Přemysl Otakar II), was imprisoned as a young man, y1279.
