Yeah, lots of unnecessary drama here but at the hear of it is a core problem that is touched on here:

"It's a known goal of the Sharia that prioritizing life itself overrides outward implementation of the religion when the former is under threat."

There's actually major diference of opinion with this axiom at the highest levels of fiqh.
