#Day10 #21dayOfNostr

One thing I’ve noticed is the lack of conversation on Nostr about the power of Zaps for local businesses. I’m not talking about online stores—I mean mom-and-pop shops like your local grocery or barber. Not the “buy my online course” type.

For example, Instagram is packed with content from local businesses showcasing their shops, with users commenting, liking, and sharing if it’s good. But Instagram’s primary goal is to harvest data and trap users in its algorithm. Nostr offers something better: the power of interaction PLUS the ability to tip these businesses. That’s invaluable.

The use case is clear: send Zaps to local businesses and support the community by engaging with their content.

However, there are a few obvious challenges that I believe can be resolved with time:

Niche Usage: Bitcoin and Lightning are still early in their adoption, and Nostr is even more niche. (Is “nicher” a word? Let’s make it one!)

Education: Bitcoin and Lightning are still on their educational journey, mainly driven by algorithm-driven platforms. Nostr, on the other hand, is being propelled by the ultimate word-of-mouth machine. That’s incredible to think about.

Volatility: This is a big hurdle for small businesses using Bitcoin. Convincing them to accept small transactions in a “volatile” currency is a tough sell. Plus, the infrastructure for seamless interoperability is still developing—we’re just so early.

Nostr represents freedom, self-sovereignty, and individualism—the very reasons these small businesses exist in the first place. They crave the freedom of working outside traditional employment, being individuals, and giving back to their local community - with a sense of purpose. But the system is rigged, and running a small business often becomes just another job, with extra responsibility.

I believe Nostr has the potential to keep these small businesses motivated and enthusiastic about their journey.

but local business want donations? I think they want sales

I'm starting a small local business and as we speak, integrating Bitcoin into every level of the plan. It is becoming clearer all the time how it's going to work in a fiat world

As a savings tool, BTC in, hodl it.

As currency,- BTC in, convert to euros and spend it on justifiable business exoenses, no cap gain tax event, just account for it as income.

As it stands, to live with a true bitcoin standard,, at some point it is kind of leaving it to someone in the chain to cash out into fiat. Unless an accountan ist able to fill the big gap in my knowledge, this is the process:

Capital gains tax issue especially when number is going up. One solution to keep the business itrading all in BTC, is to line up suppliers in advsnce who will accept Bitcoin. When I receive BTC from a sale, I send it straight to a feed supplier for example, as a payment against an order. I always need feed, or the chickens will, I mean. No profits made. So I'm alright, for cap gains

But all that does is pass the buck, unless the supplier has ways to spend their bitcoin too.

I know in a circular economy bitcoin is brilliant as currency, but I'm not sure how to sell the ides to others without having to admit that without cashing out into fiat and spending it, bitcoin is more a matter of philosophy IE we are proving we believe in it even though it is costing either hard cash, excuse the terminology, or tve ridicule of having to rely on fiat to make it work for daily business.

So it makes no hard business sense day to day.. but magic as a treaury asset

Obviously if the tax office were to drop the Cap Gain penalty for day to day use that's the game changer

To balance it out. I guess, you could just make losses, in a bear market,? holding back efore you spend BTC.

Anyway, if relying on fiat to make it work day to day is the only option, so be it. Greater minds than mine no doubt see the nuts and bolts that need to be tweaked to get to an easier usage of BTC for everything.

Am I missing anything obvious?

Did you see what https://www.tanglesheep.com/ are doing to feed their sheep? It's a pretty cool way to teach people how the Lightning Network works - and it's value. I know your point about this being apart of a Bitcoin circular economy is valid here - although we are still so early. Building these small communities are what will create a stable bitcoin economy.

Cap gains isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I don't see a way around that. Except for being illiquid. Playing the long game and Staying Humble, Stacking Sats.

We are winning. Congrats on your work so far too. 🫡🧡

I run a magazine and eager to help businesses like this take off. Would be great to hop on a call and discuss your story and value proposition. Reach out via email if you're up for it: sean@bitesizebitcoin.xyz

I’m in. Time to learn all there is to learn.
