You don't need an api key (fine-grained access token) to work, only if you have your repo hosted on github only. For reading the repo you don't even need the access token, only if you want to perform push operations.

Otherwise it will work with gitlab, gitea and such, plus of course in due time with grasp servers, bc that uses nostr-based authentication which will be the best user experience with budabit.
