My last three phones were bought straight up, and unlocked (in both ways) to boot; it's a more upfront cost, ESPECIALLY with the Pixels, but it's well worth it in not having to worry about twenty degrees of carrier fuckery.
This also comes in handy if you want to switch carriers LATER.

He. I vaguely remember that getting phone via carrier with locked contract was a thing some time ago here too.
So in US this still works, interesting. Maybe there is some regulation behind it here in EU, I wouldn't be surprised...
