True, in fact the only reason English managed to escape Dunkirk was due to the heavy resistance fighters of France and the English Commonwealth (Indians and others) that fought in the streets while it gave time for the English to escape.

Another huge story completely left out in movies like Dunkirk for example.

Now why leave out the valiant efforts of the French resistance and the Commonwealth soldiers? In fact the movie promoted the ships and vessels who came from England to save them, but not the men who died in the streets trying to slow down the Nazi advance to give the English time to flee.

Probably one of the biggest military cock ups ever. I guess that's what happens when you have a celebrity as leader instead of someone with brains.

it was Hitler's order to Guderian and Rommel to stop the German armored units before Dunkirk, which gave the British Expeditionary Force enough time to get to safety across the English Channel

the German generals were furious as they saw a unique opportunity to inflict a decisive defeat on the British and French

Hitler, on the other hand, wanted to enter into an alliance with Great Britain, a serious mistake that decisively changed the course of the war

and yes, it was the Red Army that won the war against Germany, not the USA

that's the story they like to say, and while Hitler was a little apprehensive about it, he knew Sun Tzu saying "leave an opening for the enemy to escape, least face fierce resistance"

So as much as Hitler eased on the push, during the Dunkirk escape, the French resistance along with the commonwealth soldiers put up a tough fight, street by street to slow down the German push.

We knew for example, the Germans knew exactly where the retreat was happening (they flew planes over Dunkirk beachhead) so they knew they pushed the Brits to the edge, but I doubt Hitler saw Churchill as an ally, more of a man who could be bombed into submission.
