I want to multisig. But I don’t want to spend +$300 on more hardware wallets. I’d rather just buy $300 more BTC

Why multisig? Is there a comfort of security you receive by doing it?
I’d like to multi-sig my families BTC holdings at some point for inheritance reasons. So no rush. But will need to eventually.
