Here’s the numbers.

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, in 2022 there were about 380,000 arrests for violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault).

• The U.S. population is about 333 million.

• That works out to roughly 0.11% of the population arrested for a violent crime in a given year.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reports that about 60% of state prisoners are serving time for violent offenses.

• In 2022, there were around 1.2 million people in state and federal prisons.

• That means about 700,000–750,000 people are imprisoned for violent crimes.

• As a share of the total U.S. population, that’s roughly 0.2%.

OK, but if you kill off one percent of the population, there will still be 100% of the population left.

We don’t need to kill them all. Prison is fine for most.

The one argument against the death penalty that I find compelling is that sometimes people as wrongly convicted and executing innocent people should be avoided at all costs!
