I spent 7 weeks in Haiti in 2011 and at that time there were 20,000 NGOs operating there after the earthquake. 12 years later, it's hard to measure their impact, given the situation in Haiti now. An interesting book that expands on the underlying issues with humanitarian aid is called The Crisis Caravan by Linda Polman. Despite the hurricanes and earthquakes it has endured, I think the biggest disaster in Haiti is man-made, and it's hard to imagine a way out. Remittances in Haiti accounted for 23% of their GDP in 2022. I assume a big portion passes through Western Union or MoneyGram. I wonder whether Bitcoin could be a viable alternative network that will contribute to country's potential to succeed in the future.
