I believe the respect shown toward veterans, despite knowing they are essentially hired mercenaries or state-sanctioned killers, stems from a herd instinct shaped by decades of indoctrination and collectivist propaganda.
They "serve" the collectivist, imperial order of a world empire whose ruling class despises "the country".
