If devs build what they think ppl want to pay for and contribute to the codebase in order to make their lives easier and their money maker more money makey then we ma end up with something like linux. Hard to make money writing linux kernel code unless you have some outside incentive but it happens.

most will fail as all companies do but the codebase will continue. Its not charity. It comes down to properly aligned incentives.
