Question for GrapheneOS users, what are the biggest drawbacks or gotchas you've noticed? I see that CashApp and many banking apps are not supported. I'm getting ready to make the switch, but trying to get prepared.

My banking apps 'sort of work' for instance my main bank app works except, weirdly, for internal account transfers. Authy doesn't work. Otherwise it's been an excellent experience 👍
Now that is in interesting. Authy doesn't work at all?
Authy?
Use the FOSS TFA app "Aegis," available on F-Droid and probably on Zapstore as well. No Google need.
Yes, I use Aegis
Unfortunately Authy doesn't make it easy to migrate. 😡
If you haven't already started using Authy, it's probably best to not start using Authy at all.
I've been running nothing but Linux since 2006, so I don't run into a lot of migration issues. I go through great effort to figure out and learn how to do things in FOSS apps from the get-go.
Damn straight...some (mainly work related)things keep me stuck with Microsoft. Fucking hate it. Would love to be fully FOSS.
My employer forces MS on me, but all my personal stuff is FOSS, including my kids' and half of my wife's tech.
I have my kids on locked down DeGoogled kid phones with our own Nextcloud online ecosystem.
Very nice. I'm mid process...one child on calyx (graphene next upgrade) other child and wife literally about to go GOS. Home server of some sort on my to-do list...am wondering about next cloud, start 9 etc etc. need to spend some more time upgrading my understanding. Want to understand about hardware routers as well...my to-do list is long!
Does Calyx let you disable app installation on the kids login? Jyst curious. I avoid Calyx because they seem to be Marxist aligned, with their raised commie fist logo, and them promoting "Rise Up" etc.
Not sure about kids limitations. I've ditched Calyx and am glad I did with what you have just said! Will change remaining child's phone sooner than later! Fuck Marxist shit.
Nope.. actually, now I think of it there is a blog post ....
Been using it for over a year.
My banking app just stopped but idk the reason yet. Calling today to figure it out.
It depends on your tolerance and how much permissions you give apps.
Here is how I run it. And I welcome people to point out any potential security or privacy holes:
Pixel 7a
Aurora store
No permissions allowed on Google play store or Google play services.
No Google apps that require any sign in
I do have Google and assistant installed and sometimes I play with permissions to get voice control to work on Android auto but mostly I remove all permissions.
Minor annoyances:
android auto voice control is wonky
With play services denied network access certain notifications won't work (life360 for example) - but generally I don't care because I hate notifications.
This is good to know. So notifications can be an issue without Google Play services. You mentioned Android Auto is wonky. What kind of issues are you running into?
MOST KEYBOARDS ABSOLUTELY BLOW, TRY FLORISBOARD OR THUMB-KEY FOR A CHALLENGE
VIDEO EDITING ON SCREEN RECORDING TURNED GLITCHY AND UNUSABLE
HAD ISSUES WITH CALLING / RECIEVING CALLS WHICH WAS THE FINAL STRAW FOR ME. BUT I STILL HAVE THE GRAPHENE PHONE FOR BITCOIN NOSTR AND OTHER FREEDOM TECH
I WOULD LIKE TO SWITCH BACK AFTER LEARNING AND CUSTOMIZING THE PHONE A BIT MORE
I use Gboard but deny network access on permissions. Again. I feel like I'm doing wrong but I need someone smarter to tell me why that's dumb. It works great for me. @grapheneos please tell me.
This isn't dumb at all, it's definitely the best keyboard available. I'm also using it.
It's in the roadmap to replace the stock OS keyboard with another but software licensing can be an issue.
THE KEYBOARD SITUATION IS BAD - BUT NOT BAD ENOUGH FOR ME TO WILLINGLY PUT GOOGLE HORSESHIT ON MY PHONE, I DO NOT TRUST THEIR PERMISSIONING. FOR NOW ANYWAY (ITS SO BAD)
A first glance, yes.
But there are workarounds to use those apps nevertheless in a separated profile off from other apps. Just look around and you will find some hints.
