Xi is a dictator who is hell bent on not letting what happened to his Daddy happen to him. A lot of talk is made of the century of humiliation but that was a time where they were colonized by Manchus anyway. It's more than a century and it's not just at the hands of "the West." Play by rules everyone else is supposed to play by, stop stealing intellectual property, stop undercutting other markets with slave labor and China will get the respect it so craves.
Dictators over the past 100 years in China have caused as much death and suffering as any as any Western despot. The Chinese are equal in the eyes of the Lord, of course, but the Communist Party does not deserve equal footing on the world stage if the CCP keeps acting the way it has for the past 13 or so years.
