Compass barrel cactus at the botanical gardens I started volunteering at recently. The flowers remind me of strawflower—they have that same papery look to them. That look tells you something about the provenance of this cactus: hot and dry. Many temperate and tropical cacti have the big, blousy flowers that are more delicate and only last usually an evening.
