[ A celebration of the American philosophical belief in the right to "alter", "abolish" and "throw off" tyrannical government and form a new one.]

I'm ready when you are. But alas most people love slavery and tyranny it seems.

From my liberty loving friend Carl Jones

July 4th is not the birth of "America". The first American colony in what would become the "union" was Virginia.....which was founded in 1607. Many of the States are in fact quite older than the union. Contrary to popular Lincolnian rhetoric, the Declaration of Independence created nothing. What it did was to establish the separation of thirteen sovereign and independent "countries" (States) from their former parent government. No formal union of these States was implemented until the Articles of Confederation were ratified approximately five years later. Seven years after that, the States then seceded again, as they dissolved the Articles of Confederation in favor of the US Constitution.

While separation from England was ultimately the first step towards what would become the united States (yes, in the Declaration of Independence the "u" is lower case) it did not initiate or give birth to any new country. Thus, tomorrow is not the anniversary of our founding, rather it is a celebration of the American philosophical belief in the right to "alter", "abolish" and "throw off" tyrannical government and form a new one. It is a celebration of secession.
