I’d not come heard of this platform before https://www.nme.com/news/music/dj-revenue-platform-aslice-shuts-down-after-many-of-the-highest-paid-djs-in-the-world-decided-not-to-contribute-3790945

Haven’t heard of it either. Hope it wasn’t pronounced ass-lice…

All kidding aside, if it was dependent on big names/deep pockets contributing, that’s a single point of failure. 😨

What she said 👆

Never! Lol

That's interesting, I'd never heard of it either. Thanks for sharing, there's some lessons I think we could learn here

Also, TIL Richie Hawtin is Plastikman 🤯

Yeah I was a bit fan of his Minis label

Just thinking about this again this morning and especially this part…

Gonna try and read through the Aslice mechanics, but it’s crazy work if DJ’s are buying the music, then playing it, paying PROs for licensing to play it, then paying the artists/producers separately for playing it, then paying the platforms that they’ve played the music on for playing it. With the lions share of money going to 🥁…LABELS! 😬

Imo the DJ is helping the artist more than the labels or the platforms, as they’ve already paid (although small on the licensing side) to OWN and play the artists music. Without the DJs many of these artists would have minimal discovery on these oversaturated platforms.

An artist who is getting spun by 1000’s of DJs will never need a label or a platform that they don’t own themselves.

It’s a lot of rent to pay. All that greed and still aslice fails… you mean the communism that you never own your stuff doesn’t work out? It’s like the mafia coming to take a cut…and then another mafia…and another one…

And the crazy idea that the rich folks

Need to pay a success tax… you mean that didn’t work out either?????

Idk what to say about Twitch other than RUN 🏃‍♀️ I’ve heard of these cool things like Zap.stream and nostr:npub1h8gzew8am6cezuq7cpjgudldra40hgnruqrqlsrqnxnzs5wjtczqztps02 …maybe try those 😉

Not to mention you still have to pay a distribution fee to get your music onto the legacy platforms.

The majority of artists don’t make the kind of money to even justify that amount of rent seeking.

Indeed. That was a big part of taking our music off streaming services. Everyone taking a cut out of not very much.

I agree. It’s up to us not to play the game, otherwise we all lose.

Opting out is a super power 💪

This is why value sharing is so important, because agreements can still be made (contracting, pricing, royalties) with ultra transparent value sharing and artist/producer/DJ/distributor/manager/promoter all eat.

Labels at that point are kind of forced to also become value sharing in order to take part in that economy.

I love how you put this

Me neither. Been many artist die broke. Only far there’s some revenue on the backend.

Never heard of a label exec dying broke though. So many artists deals are caught up in a load of fuckry.

Re label execs 💯. Maybe indie label?

Indie labels have it super though. They get paid less per stream than the majors.

Most indies are BBE (barely breaking even).
