Most people don't even understand the last three concepts, let alone the first one, I find.

It's like expecting them to understand chemical engineering for the purpose of explaining how gasoline makes a car go when they have never taken organic chem, don't understand internal combustion, or that you don't actually have to ask anyone before starting up a car... if that puts it into perspective for you?
