Depends what plane and where you’re located. Average 172 rental (what most people train in) where I’m located is ~175/hr plus another 50 for the instructor. Takes somewhere between 40-80 hours to get your private pilot license depending on how frequently you fly and study.

Do it! I started by buying a textbook and studying for the written test. I also found a video course online that helped. I figured if I still want to do it after that, I’ll spend the money and actually learn.
The good news, at least for me, was the material was actually interesting.
