Coming from Ubuntu I’m honestly surprised by this nonsense.. they’ve been way better about this in the past.

I understand the desire and need to move away from the x11 protocol.. while it’s stable it’s also bloated. And the server-client model requires a LOT of bandwidth comparatively speaking…

I mean you could NOT do x11 anything on dialup when dialup was king…. And trying to maintain x11 based apps cold could be a real PITA years ago. Not to mention Wayland is way faster and far more inherently secure but even with their adapter adoption has been slow…

But FFS when the upgrade kills the desktop and you can’t log in??

Anyway you can read more about Wayland vs X11 here.

i’ve just stayed on X11 because it still works for my use case ..kinda plan on testing Wayland in couple of years

Well if you use Ubuntu you won’t get much say in the manner.. 🤣

Debian with i3wm keeps it nice and simple for me in the meantime

I mostly went with Ubuntu because I’ve had better luck with it on Legacy Mac hardware (like this 2009 5,1 cheese grater I just installed it on). Perhaps I should rethink that…
