I'm actually fairly sure that episode was intentional and was used as part of an effort to bring Musk into line.
Notice that since then his posts have either been entirely pro-government or encouraging "gooning" (what they're apparently calling generating AI girl softporn and attributing it to an AI girlfriend), which is strange behavior for someone who previously was concerned about Americans not reproducing fast enough.
Could be. Given that most of Musks wealth was acquired through government subsidized businesses (SpaceX, Tesla, what else?), to think he is really a free actor is naive.
