i find that being so singularly focused on a direct goal often makes you not appreciate or even experience certain other positive outcomes that may come from the pursuit of that specifc goal, that you would, were you just have a system in place for it

Exactly. Almost all of the benefit of human flourishing has come from:

"aim at something, find something better"

plus

"have consistent ways of being that produce maximum opportunity to capitalize on the surprises/opportunities/challenges/encounters".
