Antoine Riard a LN dev found critical vulnerability that allows for attackers to steal users funds from LN channels called Recyling and Pinning Attacks.
He then left lightning labs to focus on bitcoin core.
The solutions proposed in the lightning devs mailing list of this fix are soft forks to the mainchain. Suchas OP_EXPIRE AND OP_CHECKCONtRACTVERIFY.

The gas lighting reminds me of dictatorship propaganda.
A handfull of people choose "improvements", and when these ideas don't work out the fix is also decided by the same unelected people.
User choice through Drivechain is a dire existential insurance for Bitcoin itself.
It has to be adopted just to ossify core and protect a 1+ trillion market from power mad engineers.
