5000 years of warring civilizations with no fiat currencies: "Are we a joke to you?"

Like seriously, a cursory googling suggests unbacked currencies didn't really exist until less than a thousand years ago. We sure as hell managed to wage wars for millennia before then. Why would we be unable to figure it out again now?
