It’s my understanding that relays can filter out content they don’t want and choose not to relay it.

I thought a relay can choose to not relay content from say Dogecoin websites while allowing content from Bitcoin Magazine and it begins to resemble a bitcoin subreddit.

I’ll have to go further down that rabbit hole but I think that niche relays will emerge to serve specific communities.

Relays can block certain keywords but they can't actively moderate content like subreddits.

A relay is unable to omit photos or links to certain sites?

It can but that is passive censorship/moderation.

A subreddit has active (human) moderation that makes sure content stays on-topic.

I hear you but the difference is that there can be multiple relays that focus on the same niche so censorship cannot happen in the same capacity. Deplatforming can’t really happen at all since relays have to compete with each other and Nostr is a protocol not a platform.

Also, relays can omit mentions of shitcoins and NFTs like you mentioned in your original post.
