I was discussing trans issues with someone and they said:

"But why should gender matter?"

Here's the response I shared:

"Gender matters because people make it matter. It's like the old "I don't see color" in regards to race... We have to, because equality does not exist yet, and people are treated differently because of their race. Likewise, people are treated differently due to the gender they are, or feel, or present as.

I can say "I don't care about gender" and mean that I don't care what you choose for your gender, I just want you to be okay... But also, I care deeply about the *issue* of gender because I have friends who are denied rights, and their lives are threatened by people (often people in positions of power) who think they should be dead.

So yeah... that's why gender matters right now.
