maybe would be better to see in a glance what everybody else is signaling in the area
I was thinking about it, but it doesn't feel right to see everyone and "spy" their interests. I don't know.
Why weird?
It's not for all, but it's a game, if you take part in it you are available to be approached by an total stranger, that only know what you like, for example, opera concerts or crochet. It's funny and quite... social.
You can choose if matching the topics exactly or partially in the preference.

I know, the network effect is necessary and hard to achieve. The interesting point is that Bitalk requires really few actions from the user, just put it in the background and wait for the notification. When it happens, approach the people.
It might be interesting to see what happens at festivals/mettups if the organization actively promotes Bitalk at the entrance.
