It could be a cultural shift toward sterility in design. I've seen it in architecture and building furnishing and layout too.

Or maybe car lease bullshit. The colors may be harder to dump. My guess is that most people aren't sickened by gray, black, or even white like they might be with green, yellow, or some other color.
