I think many forget how much gold is used in electronics
If we found a mineable asteroid, or a patch in the arctic, or something, gold could theoretically become worth less than fiat. Only programmable scarcity, enforced by a distributed network will protect your value throughout millennia.
Gold is already only valued for its utility, like everything else.
