I now really want to see an MLS-inspired large-group-chat (>100,000 people in the same group) end-to-end encryption scheme through Nostr.
That would be awesome.

I think nostr:npub1jlrs53pkdfjnts29kveljul2sm0actt6n8dxrrzqcersttvcuv3qdjynqn has looked into this a bit before. Can’t imagine it will be easy
It won't be, but it's doable.
what's the point of encryption in such a large group?
somebody pls MLS-pill me
It takes time to get MLS pilled. We have been looking at it for months now.
still I don't understand how MLS solves this: It's 99.99% someone will leak the entire chat history in such a large group.
Anyone can screenshot anything that is visible. Encryption doesn't protect against that. But
1. People cannot verify screenshots. They can't decrypt by themselves.
2. It also protects who has permission to write in the group. Imagine syncing a presidential campaign via chat where only the top aides can write.
3. MLS reduces the cost of distribution of messages from having to encrypt to each receiver to just going down a tree of keys. The benefits is on reducing that traffic.
One thing I think I've realized is that MLS makes it impossible to index across all chat groups for keywords in bulk. This is an important property because it makes the job of censors much more difficult. But I am still sure that in a group of 100,000 there will be a participant who will leak his nsec for evidence.
st. louis CITY fan here!!
