The 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated while riding in a motorcade through Dallas. He was 46. A ten-month investigation by the Warren Commission concluded that the lone assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was murdered by Jack Ruby before he could stand trial.
.Ninety-nine minutes after President Kennedy was pronounced dead, Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson – aboard Air Force 1, flanked by his wife and Mrs. Kennedy in her blood-stained coat – was sworn in as the 36th president of the United States.
Mary Wells and Sam Cooke performed their first of two concerts today at New York’s Apollo Theater. Between shows, word came that President Kennedy had been assassinated. Cooke immediately canceled his performance and flew back to Los Angeles.
