One place i read about this was towards the beginning of one of Wade Davis' book. He is, amoung other things, a Canadian antrhoplogist. I assumed it was true and a pretty amazing tech for cold places when there was nothing else--and i think if i remember, it was either run away with your shit knife and survive in the icy cold or be taken to the reservation.
