You can say a lot about Elon Musk, but this Twitter rebrand is 100% a personal decision.

There is no real business benefit to it, it surrenders a pretty significant intangible.

It resurrects a nostalgic dream he once had.

It’s a personal decision.

Seems X.com is going to war with Meta. That’s what this really is. Threads was just a warning shot. These are two different visions of the world and the internet.

Mark has a very cyber centric worldview, Elon has a more tangible centric view.

I think Elon realises that nobody is going to Mars any time soon. That the DART project basically obsoleted that dream. So this is a big pivot for him. X.com will tie into starlink, cars and other physical stuff.

I would not be surprised if Musk launches a satellite phone within 3 years. In fact I would be amazed if he did not. I think the hardware moat has basically vanished after checking out the Nothing (2).

Mark is also fumbling for a pivot. Almost all of his properties are at saturation. He isn’t even 40 and he feels he’s run out of things to do.

I actually think Zuckerberg might plough it all into open source. I think that’s maybe 50:50 at this point. He just hasn’t figured out a biz model yet.

But I would sell any Apple or Google stock, that era is over.
