the problem is with this is it is trying to apply sober analysis to a drunk man

smart reasoning would keep you from starting down this path to begin with, but here we are. Just like you can't tell which way a drunk man will sway, you can't assume they will swerve back because it will keep them upright longer.
I feel like I say this every week but the problem with economics is that it bases all analysis on the supposition that actors in a market act rationally.
